78 North Circle Avenue, Port Barrington, IL

In 1925, just 38 miles northwest of the city, a vacation spot developed along the Fox River south of Island Lake, where fishing and water sports took place right outside the back doors of cottages.

Today, you can still live on the channel, though Port Barrington, so named just about 10 years ago, and formerly the Village of Fox River Valley Gardens is less of a vacation town with about 1,300 permanent residents.  But you’ll still encounter the small town feel with a smattering of small shops and a marina as a focal point. Fishing enthusiasts appreciate that Port Barrington includes series of man-made waterways known as the Nielsen Channels, noted as one of the best fishing spots in the Chain-O-Lakes region.
