In 1925, just 38 miles northwest of the city, a vacation spot developed along the Fox River south of Island Lake, where fishing and water sports took place right outside the back doors of cottages.
Today, you can still live on the channel, though Port Barrington, so named just about 10 years ago, and formerly the Village of Fox River Valley Gardens is less of a vacation town with about 1,300 permanent residents. But you’ll still encounter the small town feel with a smattering of small shops and a marina as a focal point. Fishing enthusiasts appreciate that Port Barrington includes series of man-made waterways known as the Nielsen Channels, noted as one of the best fishing spots in the Chain-O-Lakes region.
If this is the life for you, you’ve got a great opportunity to own a spacious year-round home right on the channel. Watching the sunset over the river will become regular pastime from the large comfortable deck that looks over a huge backyard down to the water and your own dock.
The home at 78 N Circle has large rooms, is great for entertaining and is available for under $275K from Sam Valadez and Jeff Pearson of Koenig & Strey’s Libertyville office. Think about this summer on the river!
